The British Museum: A Must-Visit for History
Lovers
The British Museum is by far one of the most impressive museums
the world has ever seen and it’s collection of artefacts from
around the globe is so extensive, it is necessary to plan an
itinerary in order to see as much as possible. From Egyptian
mummies to ancient pottery, the British Museum will captivate you
as soon as you walk in the door.
Upon entering the
British Museum, you will find yourself in the inner
courtyard, a massive enclosed structure with a magnificent glass
roof. The courtyard is home to temporary exhibitions, the world
famous reading room and your first steps in an incredible journey
through history…
Our Favourite Exhibits at The British Museum
An
exhibit that should not be missed is the Rosetta Stone: a massive
block of volcanic rock that was found in Egypt in the late
seventeenth Century. It describes a great battle that took place in
Lycopolis and dates back to 196 BC. What is fascinating about the
Rosetta Stone is that it not only records this great siege, but it
also records the state of Egypt in that era. The Rosetta
Stone is carved in three languages and
references the Greek God Zeus. This is an exhibit that should be on
every history enthusiast’s itinerary.
The Elgin Marbles/Parthenon Sculptures are an incredible look into
the Greek Culture; brought to the British Museum in 1816 by Lord
Elgin and they have been spared further damage and decay within the
walls of the museum. The sculptures are the actual column from the
ruins of the Parthenon in Greece. The British Museum exhibits many
more Greek sculptures that are beautifully preserved.
Perhaps the most popular section of the museum is the Egyptian
mummies; The British Museum has the second largest collection of
ancient Egyptian materials in the world today. From exquisitely
conserved Mummies to the tools and equipment used to preserve them,
these ancient corpses provide interesting insight into Egyptian
culture.
Before you head back to your
hotel in Bloomsbury, make time to check out The Sutton
Hoo Helmet. It is a rare look into the history of England. Made of
iron and decorated with tin and bronze panels, this incredible
helmet was worn by a king and recovered from a ship burial from the
seventh century AD. The exhibit also displays ancient weapons of
the time.
Visiting the British museum is like taking a walk through history;
the magnificent exhibits and displays gives world-class insight
into the lives of people centuries ago. It gives a unique
perspective on the development of civilizations and cultures
worldwide.
The British Museum is more than just an attraction- it is a walk
through history. Better still- it is just a three minute walk from
The Bloomsbury Hotel on Great Russell Street.
