Theatre in London
Theatre has a long and rich history in jolly old London Town.
The first permanent public theatre, called simply "The Theatre",
was built in 1576, as part of the emergence of theatre after the
English Reformation. The Curtain was built a year later, in 1577;
both theatres were used by William Shakespeare’s company. In 1599,
timber from The Theatre was moved to Southwark in south London to
build the famous Globe Theatre.
The West End theatre district became established when several
small theatres and performing halls were built there in the early
1800s, and strengthened throughout the century, until it became one
of the most famous theatre districts in the world. The area remains
distinguished to this day. If you are planning on catching a
