5 Romantic Things To Do in Dublin

Getting in the mood for Valentine's Day

Keep things romantic in Dublin with a visit to the chic terrace at Balfes and a luxurious stay in The Westbury.

It’s the time of year where romance is at the forefront of our minds. Even if the big day wasn’t just around the corner, there’s something about the chilliness of January and February that makes us want to snuggle up with someone special in front of a roaring fire, as the wind howls outside.

Dublin is a city that’s just made for romance, with its blend of pretty streets, cosy pubs and acres of gorgeous outdoor space. In honour of Valentine’s Day, we rounded up some of the most romantic things to do in Dublin.

1. Visit St Valentine

Did you know that the relics of St Valentine himself reside in a tiny church in Dublin city? Whitefriar Street Church, just around the corner from The Westbury, holds a shrine that “contains the sacred body of Saint Valentinus the Martyr, together with a small vessel tinged with his blood.” There’s a special mass held each year on Valentine’s Day, during which the remains are moved to the main altar. You can read more about the church here

2. Cycle through Phoenix Park

Take a tip from Beyonce, who did the same thing on one of her visits to the city. Phoenix Park is Europe’s largest city park and, at 1,700 acres, there are plenty of quiet spots for you to explore. Watching the resident fallow deer makes for a beautiful scene, but if you really want to up the romance, rent a tandem bike for your own “bicycle made for two” moment.

Get romantic in the city with a hot toddy on the Euro chic terrace at Balfes, next to Dublin's premier luxury hotel, The Westbury.

3. Cuddle up under a blanket

Just because the temperatures are hovering dangerously close to zero, doesn’t mean you have to hide away inside. The terrace at Balfes is heated, and comes complete with cosy blankets, so you can enjoy a hot toddy without catching a chill. Watch the world go by with a Baileys Cinnamon Coffee or a classic Hot Whiskey, and you’ll be toasty from the inside out.

4. Catch a Classic Movie

At the IFI, you’ll always find a good movie, whether it’s a new release, something under the radar or an all time classic. And in February, they’re feeling the love with screenings of the ultimate romantic movie, Magnificent Obsession by Douglas Sirk. “It’s a world of fast cars, rugged men and heroic gestures. Rock Hudson excels as playboy, Bob, ripe for redemption, and Jane Wyman is the widow, blinded by Bob’s actions.” Find out more here.
