And now there’s a new kid on the block, in the form of the super chic Balfes.

With a sleekly stylish interior, Balfes is a little touch of New York in Dublin, with a clean, simple design finished with a long line of plush leather sofas. You could be forgiven for thinking you were in a downtown brasserie, as you tuck into elegant, well-sourced Irish food, served with a modern edge.

Think along the lines of seaweed-cured salmon gravadlax from Clare Island, served with capers, pickled cauliflower & horseradish creme fraiche. Or roast Atlantic hake with quinoa & Asian greens, or a classic aged rib eye from one of Ireland’s best butchers.

As you’d expect from a bar this well stocked, the selection of cocktails on offer is top notch. There are classics such as Manhattans and Martinis mixed up with unique concoctions such as the Loulerie Sparkler, mixing raspberries, prosecco and crème de mur. Or the feisty Devilshoof, a muddle of gin, fresh basil, limencello and lemon bitters.

The best spot to enjoy your tipple is on the funky all-weather terrace, where you can watch the world go by as you snuggle under a blanket. If there’s a chill in the air, then opt for a hot whiskey, an Irish classic that will warm the bones.

But it’s not all cocktails over dinner. If you’re looking for a place to recharge before the day begins, then the breakfast menu is jam packed with goodness, with a selection of options that will help you start the day the right way. Try the oat pancakes, cooked in coconut oil, served with berries, or a freshly squeezed fruit or vegetable juice.

There are some great value lunch specials too, where you can choose from dishes like a rack of rare breed pork, smoked bacon colcannon or a half roast chicken with stuffing, roast carrot & parsnip & home cut chips. There’s a different special each day, coming in at only €15, with a homemade rice pudding.
