Tidal Basin

Kick things off at the city’s Tidal Basin; the gorgeous setting for the National Cherry Blossom festival each spring. If you’re feeling flush, head out on a paddle boat across the reservoir, otherwise stroll hand in hand towards the nearby Jefferson and Martin Luther King Jr. Memorials.

Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool

A true Washington icon, the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool is not to be missed. Dating back to 1922, the pool’s clear water reflects the Lincoln and Washington Memorials. During chilly weather, it’s known to freeze over. Cold but beautiful, and dare we say, pretty darn romantic!

Washington Monument

To the east of the pool, gaze up together at the Washington Monument; a foreboding 555ft obelisk that also happens to be the world’s tallest stone structure. If you’re feeling particularly active, there are hiking trails from Greenbrier State Park to the monument. Not so much? A climb to the top of the Monument offers stunning panoramic views of the city.

Dumbarton Oaks Gardens

This 53 acre estate was once the beloved home of Mildred and Robert Woods Bliss, who bought the land in 1920 and lovingly nurtured its gardens into the beautiful public park it is today. We recommend a guided tour to take in all this lovely site has to offer.

National Arboretum

A visit to this tranquil memorial is good for the soul. Set up in 2001 to honour the armed forces, civilian organizations and voluntary bodies who have played a part in serving the USA, this 150 acre site is home to over 50,000 trees and 300 touching memorials. Be sure to revisit on Nov 11, as at 11am each year, the sun shines through two gaps in the central Armed Forces Memorial; casting a light across its central commemorative wreath.

Theodore Roosevelt Island

This romantic getaway sits in the majestic Potamac River, and honours the iconic 26^th President. In keeping with his passion for conservation, the island is home to extensive woodland; perfect for an outdoor adventure for two.

Cruise on Potomac River

Speaking of the Potamac, it doesn’t get much more romantic than a riverboat cruise. No matter what your budget, there are plenty of options; from the 90 minute Duck Tour adventure to a more romantic moonlit version, including dinner.

National Cathedral Gardens

Landscape architect Frederick Law Olmstead Jr’s vision was of an ‘urban oasis’ when he designed the gardens around the National Cathedral. Spread over 59 acres, you’ll find the charming, walled Bishop’s Garden (home to a rose garden, winding stone paths and gazebo), and the magical Olmsted Woods.

John F. Kennedy Center’s Terrace

Whether or not you choose to catch a show at this performing arts centre, we highly recommend you make your way to its open-air rooftop terrace. Offering views in all four directions (you’ll see the Rosslyn skyline in Arlington, the Potamac, Washington Harbour and the Lincoln Memorial), this terrace is open to the public free of charge from 10am to midnight – the perfect place to whisper sweet nothings!

Dinner at the Dupont Circle Hotel

You’ll no doubt have worked up an appetite at this stage, and given the day that’s in it, why not treat yourself with a romantic Valentine’s meal? At Café Dupont’s Red Room, you’ll be served a delicious five-course Valentine’s Day menu. Ignite your passion for food with the resident chef’s aphrodisiac-inspired dishes, and if you’re feeling particularly saucy, spoil yourselves with the 50 Shades special overnight package!

Key Bridge

Finally, we suggest you finish off your day by watching the sun set from Francis Scott Key Bridge. It’s the oldest surviving bridge across the Potamac River, and provides the perfect spot to close out your romantic (and extremely budget friendly!) day together.
