5 Reasons to Visit Washington DC

How to best see the city.

Captiol building in Washington DC

It’s home to one of the most important addresses in the world, but Washington DC is also one of the most vibrant, eclectic spots for a city break. We have five reasons to plan a visit to America’s capital.

The Museums

There’s a museum for almost anyone in Washington DC. There’s the International Spy Museum, the National Air and Space Museum, and the excellent Newseum. But as well as the big hitters, there’s also the ones you may not have heard of – did you know about the National Geographic Museum, or the National Museum of Women in the Arts?
How: Prices vary

The White House

Think of Washington, and no doubt a picture of the White House pops into mind. The president’s residence is synonymous with the city, and a must-see for anyone in the capital. If you’re pushed for time, you can view the exterior of the house from the street, but you can also organise a tour of the interior. If you’re a resident of the US, this means a request to your Member of Congress, and if you’re an international guest, this can be arranged through your embassy.

Washington Monument, Washington DC

They’re as iconic as the White House, and make for an illuminating stroll, particularly if you do as Dayonna Welch from the Dupont Circle hotel recommends…

“When you get to the monuments, walk through them all and finish at Title Basin. This area is perfect during Cherry Blossom Season because everything is pink and white and you feel like ‘Alice in Wonderland’.

“You should definitely try to see the monuments at night, too. Everything looks so different at night and it’s beautiful.”

Dupont Circle

Take some time to soak in Dupont Circle, one of Washington’s liveliest neighbourhoods. You’ll find eclectic shops, bistros and groups of locals convening to enjoy the day. It’s also home to the Doyle Collection’s Dupont Circle hotel. Ask the concierge for hot tips on the local area – they know the district inside and out.

The Music

If you want to catch some live music, then you’ll find any number of great spots in the city. From free gigs in bars (with summer music taking place on the Dupont Circle terrace) to huge stadium concerts and dusky jazz bars, it’s easy to find your musical match.
