How to spend a summer family holiday in Dublin

Things to do with kids in the city

Family activities in Dublin in the summer

As we are currently being blessed with a glorious summer, a staycation in Ireland has never seemed like a better idea. And while it’s always nice to get to the coast, a city break is an often overlooked option that’s great for little kids. And there’s plenty to do throughout the summer months. We've rounded up some of the best things you can do with little ones in tow…

Take a walk in the park

It’s the perfect time to take a stroll around the park. Head to Stephen’s Green and take an amble around the footpaths, and see if you can spot the seagulls masquerading as ducks in the pond (bring some breadcrumbs to feed them, too). There are plenty of shady spots where you can sit on the grass, and bandstands that provide shelter as well. If you want a bigger area to explore, head up to the Phoenix Park and rent bikes, cycling around in the sunshine and see if you can spot the resident deer. There’s a great playground there, too.

Head to the zoo

Also in the Phoenix Park, Dublin Zoo is one of the best in Europe, with plenty of animals in a happy and content environment. There are almost always new additions to the family, too – the most recent arrivals are three California sea lion pups.

Pop into the museums

Sometimes the heat can be a little much for young ones, particularly in the middle of the day. So this is a great time to head inside to one of Dublin’s excellent (and free) museums. Like the National Museum of Ireland – Natural History, otherwise known as the Dead Zoo. Not only are the hundreds of different kinds of animals on display, there’s also an excellent interactive exhibit where kids can get stuck in. In the Archaeology branch, there are workshops and fun activities planned throughout the summer holidays.

Take a bus tour

Not sure what you want to do next? Book in for a bus tour of the city, where you can hop on and hop off to your heart’s content. You can see all the sights of the city, choosing where you want to disembark and explore more closely. There’s a special Discover Dublin package at The Croke Park for families including complimentary tickets for the DoDublin Hop on Hop Off Tour.

There are excellent family packages available at both The Westbury and The Croke Park, including special treats for kids, and things that will help your holiday run smoothly. You can see details of both at The Westbury and The Croke Park websites.
