Keeping Fit in Cork

How to get active in the city

There are plenty of ways to get active in Cork city, with running routes, cycle paths, kayaking in the city and a gym right in The River Lee hotel.

With the endorphins still pumping in the city after the Marathon, there’s a real fitness buzz going on in Cork. Add in the (slightly) summery weather, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for a workout.

If you want to get active while you’re in the city, then we have some ideas to get the blood pumping.

Go for a run

The success of the marathon has seen plenty of people pounding the pavements in Cork. And with a wealth of great jogging routes around the city, you’re never short of a path to get you itching to put on your runners. You can always find a runner to chat to at The River Lee – many members of staff completed the recent marathon, and they all have expert knowledge about the best routes to take. You can find two great routes here ( https://www.doylecollection.com/blog/cork-running-routes), whether you’re after a 5km or 10km run. Or just ask in reception – there will more than likely be a running enthusiast nearby!

Get on your bike

Cycling has seen a huge surge in popularity over the last few years, and Cork is a great place to get on the bike. You can find some fabulous routes on Map My Ride  or again, by asking in reception. You can also rent a bike directly outside the hotel from the Coca-Cola Bikes

Paddle a kayak

With such a beautiful river running through the city, it would be a waste not to get out on the water. Atlantic Sea Kayaking have a Cork City Tour, which lets you paddle through some of the city’s prettiest spots. You can see more here.

If you want to keep fit in Cork, try the gym inside the River Lee Hotel in the middle of the city.

Take a Class

Let’s face it – sometimes the weather just isn’t on your side. And even when it is, you can’t always muster up the energy to get a really good workout in. Enter the NRG Gym, handily right inside The River Lee. There, you can take spin class, aqua aerobics, boxing or hot yoga, and many more. You can see more about it  here, or read  our post about some of the class here.

Stand Up Paddleboarding

It’s sometimes easy to forget just how close Cork city is to the coast. Just over 30 minutes in the car will take you to Fountainstown, where you can walk on the water with a SUP session. Funky Town lead SUP classes, teaching you how to paddle while standing and seeing the coastline as you do.
