Hot Toddy Season at The River Lee

Warm the cockles in Cork

Enjoy a warming hot chocolate in The River Lee in Cork, from the special hot toddy winter menu

At this time of year, there’s nothing better than cosying up with a steaming hot toddy. When there’s a chill in the air, and frost on the ground, a warming cocktail is the only thing you want. But sometimes a simple hot whiskey won’t quite cut it.

The River Lee has just launched an exciting Hot Toddy menu, with something to suit every taste, whether you want to keep things classic or try something a little different. The menu draws on the rich local resources of the area, from the winter apples of Mallow to the incredible spirits distilled in Skibbereen and Middleton.

Here’s a selection of what’s on offer…

Enjoy a hot toddy from the special winter menu in The River Lee, the prime cocktail venue in Cork.

Warm Longueville Cider

Hot cider is growing in popularity over here, after years as the American winter cocktail of choice. In The River Lee, the seasonal warm Longueville cider (which comes from the north of Cork) comes muddled with Longueville red apple brandy and fresh cranberry, served with a garnish of homemade dried apple.

Weir Fíon Láidir

It isn’t Christmas without mulled wine, and this classic cocktail is made with a rich Cabernet, and dressed with orange, star anise and cinnamon. The perfect winter concoction.

Skibbereen Hot Toddy

Made with whiskey produced in the gorgeous town of Skibbereen, this hot toddy is certain to warm the cockles. It comes with a skewer of fresh ginger, folded lemon and rich honey, making it the perfect drink to ward off winter colds.

The Last Harvest

There are certain flavours that epitomise winter, and this cocktail has them in droves. With West Cork Whisky, apple juice, cinnamon and mint leaves, The Last Harvest will make you feel like it’s Christmas.

Winters Berry

There’s more than a hint of festivities to this one, which comes with its own candy cane. A fruitier number, this cocktail combines Jameson, Chambord, cranberry, raspberry and orange.

If you’d prefer something non-alcoholic (perhaps as an interlude to Christmas shopping) then the barista has a number of cheerful options on the menu. There’s a Spiced Pumpkin Latte, topped with freshly whipped cream and a dash of cinnamon. Or the Chai Spiced Latte, for a truly warming option. The Peppermint Patty is a must for chocoholics – the mint hot chocolate comes with all the trimmings (whipped cream, marshmallows and more chocolate!)

If you’re feeling peckish, there are a few foodie options to keep you toasty, in addition to the regular menu. Nothing beats warm cookies, straight from the oven – unless they’re served with homemade chocolate-chip milk, as they are with Cookies and Cream. There are warm poppy seed pretzels served with maple syrup and English mustard, or the piece de resistance – the Belgian Chocolate Fondue Board, with toasted marshmallows, berries and a rich chocolate dipping pot.
