3. Weston-super-Mare

Alternatively, there’s a gem of a seaside course 20-odd miles away at  Weston-super-Mare that provides panoramic views over the Bristol Channel towards Wales. Established in 1892 and famously redesigned by the prominent golf architect, Alistair Mackenzie, this testy little layout is renowned for its superb greens, rolling fairways and challenging wind conditions. At just £40 per round during the week, it’s a links course worth seeking out.

Burnham and Berrow

4. Burnham & Berrow

However, the must-play course in the region is  Burnham & Berrow (32 miles away), which is one of England’s most highly-rated championship links that offers a superb challenge to golfers of all abilities. Founded in 1890, the layout is particularly noted for its distinct sand hills that form stubborn, natural obstacles alongside the pesky buckthorn, as well as for its backdrop of dramatic sand dunes and picturesque North Atlantic coastline. Green fees start from £130, reflecting the quality and high esteem in which the club is held.

After a round at any of these courses, a drink on the terrace of The Bristol’s Shore Café Bar comes highly recommended. After all, you’ve earned it!
