The Only Place in Town
Sir Terence Conran, designer, restaurateur, founder of The Conran Shop
I absolutely love Clarke's in Kensington, it’s one of my favourite places in the whole of London. It really is an institution in an area very close to my heart.
The restaurant is run by Sally Clarke – she opened it in 1984 when she returned to London after living in California, and it’s still thriving today.
A few years later she opened a shop next door that has since become one of the most renowned food stores in London, particularly the bakery, which serves divine pastries and breads that have foodies salivating.
The shop also stocks an incredible range of fruit, vegetables, salads and much, much more, leading worshippers to gastronomic heaven. Try the apricot clafoutis or one of her savoury tarts and you'll be as giddy as I am! Well over 30 years later, Sally continues to oversee the shop and restaurant with a rare passion and dedication that ensures excellence is enduring.
