48 Hours In Marylebone
The Marylebone
I’ve called London home my whole life, exploring every corner and constantly delighting in new discoveries. While I’ve relished in this city’s frenetic quick pace, from time to time I crave a bit of calm, whether that’s strolling through the park, soaking in culture at a museum or diving into an incredible meal.
For moments like these, I turn to Marylebone Village. A short walk from bustling Oxford Street, it’s easy to forget that this charming, cobble-stoned neighborhood is located in one of the busiest cities in the world. It’s quaint enclaves like Marylebone that remind me just how uniquely diverse and vast my hometown is.
When I’m keen for a reset or simply a change in scenery, a staycation does wonders. Nestled at the heart of this enchanting urban oasis is The Marylebone hotel, a peaceful refuge and vibrant conduit wrapped in one. A couple of nights rest in one of their fluffy hotel beds and a refreshingly bitter negroni in the hotel bar are indulgences I’ll never pass up – but the true attraction is the exciting atmosphere of the surrounding community. From artisanal bakeries and chic boutiques to historic institutions and greenery galore, do yourself a favour and uncover Marylebone Village on your next adventure.
Arôme Bakery
Not many know that you can enjoy the wonderfully flaky croissants and indulgent sugar-crusted from Arôme Honey Toast in Marylebone. The second branch of this iconic French-Japanese inspired is found on Duke Street, a great place to start your weekend in Marylebone. Fill up on the immaculate viennoisserie and smooth coffee and either sit in or get a takeaway if you are eager to start exploring immediately.
Wallace Collection
It’s rare to find a free museum in central London and the Wallace has a very special place in my heart. My mum has restored many of the beautiful paintings here, and they hang majestically on the jewel coloured walls. Wander round the regal rooms and take a moment of calm, to reflect and enjoy the paintings, sculptures, ceramics and furniture. They often showcase special seasonal exhibitions, like the recent, popular, ‘Portrait of Dogs’.
Perfumer H
The shopping scene in Marylebone is second to none in London with more independent stores and luxury brands than most neighbourhoods can boast. Perfumer H is one of my favourite London shops, the fragrance house of Lyn Harris (previously of Miller Harris). Choose from the shelves of carefully composed perfumes - Rain Cloud, Ink and Gold are among my favourites. The candles make lovely gifts too, opt for Marmalade which makes the ideal brunch companion.
Monocle Cafe
There is so much to entertain and occupy you in Marylebone and when you need a pick-me-up to stay focused pop into Monocle Cafe for a flat white or matcha and their cinnamon buns are also incredibly tasty. Sit on their outdoor tables and watch Chiltern Street shoppers or flick through the Monocle newspaper while you sip your drink.
La Fromagerie
Head to this charming food store to pick up a selection of the finest cheeses, a bottle of wine and anything you could need for a gourmet picnic. The knowledgeable staff are always on hand to guide you through their specialties - I highly recommend trying the Beaufort Chalet D’Alpage - a classic high mountain cheese from small traditional producers, made and matured at high altitudes in mountain chalets, and the extra creamy, stunning orange Langres soft cheese. Just round the corner from the shop is the Paddington Street Gardens, a secret grassy patch perfect for a quiet picnic.
Daunt Books
I can’t think of a nicer weekend activity than wandering round a lovely bookshop. Daunt Books is a beautiful emporium filled with endless books for every occasion. On my last visit I even spotted my new book ‘Britain’s Best Bakeries’ on the counter! Before leaving make sure you head upstairs for great views of the bookshop below.
Jikoni
This cosy and character-filled kitchen and restaurant is a homely place to enjoy dinner in Marylebone just a few minutes walk from the hotel. Chef Patron Ravinder Bhogal presents a menu of recipes inspired by Asia, The Middle East, East Africa and Britain. Order the signature crispy kale chaat, vegetarian moilee with okra fries and the banana cake with miso butterscotch for dessert.
108 Brasserie & Bar
Hotel Marylebone is home to the much-loved 108 Brasserie, a chic but casual restaurant offering refined British classics. The eatery has its own entrance and an enviable Al fresco terrace, perfect in the summer months. Sunday lunch is a delicious affair at 108 when an indulgent Roast is served. I loved the roast chicken, with buttered spring greens, epic Yorkshire pudding and addictively tasty roast potatoes! The staff are incredibly friendly and will help pick out a wine to complement your meal.
