48h Hours in Bristol

Introducing Andy Clarke
Hi there, I’m Andy Clarke – food and drinks writer, and proud Bristolian. I’ve always admired Bristol’s laid-back, friendly atmosphere, and there’s nothing I love more than showing it off to visitors. Full of flavour and culture, this city has so much to offer – and a stay at The Bristol puts your right in the heart of it all.

Logging Off and Checking In
The weekend has officially begun – and checking into The Bristol always comes with the warmest of welcomes. I drop my bags, head straight to The River Lounge, and settle in with a crisp glass of wine. It’s the perfect spot to unwind and watch the world go by as the harbourside buzzes to life outside.

Friday Night Bites
When I’m staying at The Bristol, the first night always calls for dinner at The River Grille. The vibe is relaxed but refined, with soft lighting and floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over the water. I usually go for something seasonal and locally-sourced – there’s always something that catches my eye. It’s the kind of place where you want to linger a little longer over dessert and another glass of wine.

Start with a stroll
After polishing off a leisurely breakfast, it’s time to head out and explore. I like to start with a stroll through Queen’s Square – it’s the perfect spot to soak up a bit of calm in this vibrant city. From there, I wander over to St Nicholas Market, ideal for a proper nosey with its mix of vintage stalls, local craftspeople, and mouthwatering street food. I never leave empty-handed! If there’s time, I’ll take a detour to Cabot Tower – it’s well worth it for the views. And if you’re up for a bit more adventure, renting a bike is a great way to see more of the city at your own pace.

Time for Tea
I can’t resist stopping for a cuppa at Bristol’s Old Vic. Tea is my one and only daytime vice – and there’s nothing better than a strong brew and a slice of cake in a venue that’s meant so much to me over the years. As a former drama student who loves to tread the boards, I have great memories of watching plays here. It always feels like coming home.

All Aboard
After refuelling, it’s time to discover one of Bristol’s most famous attractions – the SS Great Britain. This revolutionary steamship was the world’s largest passenger vessel from 1845 to 1853, and it still impresses today. From here, the views of Bristol’s colourful homes are fantastic – it’s a spot I visited many times as a kid and it always brings back fond memories.

A Sip of Port O
Take a moment to rest your feet and enjoy a glass of wine at one of my favourite spots in the city – Port O’Bristol Wine Bar. Run by a Bristol couple with a passion for Portuguese wine, they focus solely on shipping their wines directly from Porto to Bristol by sail. That means ever sip is completely fossil fuel free – which adds even more to the experience, if you ask me!

Sundown at Rick’s
After a couple of hours’ rest, I’d suggest heading down to Rick’s – the perfect place to spend the rest of the evening. I’m especially proud to sip on my own signature cocktail, Harbour Haze, crafted with the team here using Bristol-made Rick’s Gin, inspired by the harbour view. Paired with a beautifully curated charcuterie board, it’s relaxed, full of flavour, and exactly my kind of night.

One Last Mooch
Before checking out, I always make time for one last wander – this time to Clifton. It’s full of hidden shopping gems, from independent boutiques to vintage treasure troves and is perfect for picking up something you don’t need but absolutely want. On the way back, I like to swing by Averys Wine Merchants – family-run and full of history, it’s a great place to grab a gift for someone special… or a little something for yourself!
And there you have it – my perfect weekend in Bristol. I am so proud to call this city home. Celebrating our city’s independent shops, restaurants, and bars means the world to me, and I hope this guide inspires you to experience the magic for yourself.
